A gambling online sportsbook is a website that accepts wagers on different sporting events. These websites offer competitive odds and have easy to use interfaces. Some also offer bonuses and other incentives for betting. They are available in a number of states, though legal sports betting is not yet available in every state.
Online sportsbooks have exploded since the Supreme Court struck down PASPA. The following are some of the most popular options:
New Jersey
New Jersey has set a gold standard for legal sports betting. Its robust sportsbook landscape includes more than 26 apps, including big names like DraftKings and FanDuel. In addition to its dozens of retail sportsbooks, the Garden State is one of the top 10 sports betting states in both total handle and dollars bet all-time. And its operator-friendly setup allows it to welcome innovative new operators, including betting exchange Prophet.
Michigan
The second state to launch sports betting, Michigan boasts a large population and teams in every major league sport. Its legal sports betting system is among the most robust in the nation, allowing bettors to choose from 15 online and brick-and-mortar sportsbooks, including the likes of BetMGM and DraftKings. Michigan has become a regular contender in top-10 rankings for both monthly and all-time sports betting handle and ranks seventh in dollars bet all-time.
Colorado
Another top-10 state for sports betting, Colorado is home to a wide range of mobile and desktop sites, with each licensed casino permitted up to three online sportsbooks. Its legal sportsbook industry has grown rapidly since the Supreme Court ruling, and lawmakers are already tightening loopholes and lowering tax rates.
Illinois
The biggest state in the Midwest, Illinois passed legislation to allow sports betting and launched on Sept. 1, 2022, just in time for the NFL season. Its market has boomed since then, and it finished in the top 5 for both total handle and taxes in 2022. A major roadblock lifted March 5, 2022, when a requirement for in-person registration (waived on a month-by-month basis during pandemic lockdowns) expired.
Indiana
The 13th state to legalize sports betting, Indiana is now one of the biggest for both total handle and revenue. Its market has been powered by a strong foundation of retail sportsbooks and the introduction in May, 2021, of the first online and mobile sportsbooks. Its current roster of licensed operators features a mix of established brands, such as FanDuel and DraftKings, along with promising young upstarts like PointsBet.
North Carolina
The newest member of the club, North Carolina is expected to open its doors to sportsbooks early next year. Gov. Roy Cooper signed a bill allowing up to 12 online sportsbooks in the state, which will be allowed to operate for at least a year. The state will also launch in-person sports betting at its casinos, and it is expected to add more brick-and-mortar outlets. It will also license mobile sports betting apps, allowing players to place bets on any device.
